Time was the only place to get a custom suit was the local tailor. Steeped in tradition, they would usually be no more than a mom and pop operation. Every well dressed gentleman had his “guy” that he would recommend to his associates. As years passed, the mom and pop custom tailors gave way, and department stores and malls took over,. Today, most custom tailors are reduced to doing alterations, hemming pants and taking in waist bands of ready made clothing. Worse yet, as more of the custom tailors disappeared so too did their tailoring techniques.
As it is right now finding a great custom tailor is a tough thing to do. The value of having old school personal services – like a tailor- has faded away. Much like others of it kind- the neighborhood butcher, milk delivery-these services have given way to impersonal mass retail.
Custom Tailor Made Suits
The classic custom tailor and his “tailor made suits” have been replaced by big “luxury” department stores and their made to measure programs.
While it’s easy to get nostalgic, it’s also easy to forget that the custom tailor did have its drawbacks. Most custom tailors were old school guys, they knew how to sew but they cut their suits one way, their way. This isn’t a problem if you like the look they crafted, but as years passed and fashions changed, the custom tailor’s inability to evolve made it easy for them to be replaced.
